Copyright music in YouTube: The image compares the monetization status of a YouTube video in the past (Then) and present (Now). In the past, the video was marked as "Ineligible" and "Video cannot be monetized". In the present, the video is monetized, displaying a dollar sign icon and the text "$20,000 Video is monetized" and a link to "Learn more". This image highlights the changes YouTube has made to help creators avoid copyright issues and successfully monetize their videos.

As creators, we know that copyright music in YouTube videos can cause a whole host of problems.

We don’t use copyright music as the sound bed for our videos unless we have clear permission. We know that “fair use” and copyright is a gray area at best. Because while a copyright claim is not necessarily a YouTube strike — a violation of the YouTube Partner Program rules — it can still lead to our videos being demonetized or worse.

But what happens when you film a video for YouTube and forget to turn off the Spotify stream before you roll? What if you’re filming in a restaurant, or at the gym, or another public place where you can’t avoid capturing copyright music? And what if you already uploaded your video? What if you already got a copyright notice?

If you’ve ever uploaded a video to YouTube only to be hit with a copyright claim on the background music, you know the pain all too well. Those copyright restrictions can be a real buzz kill, preventing your video from earning any ad revenue and in some cases, even blocking it from being viewed in certain regions.

But fear not, YouTube has cooked up a solution that’s going to make dealing with copyright music in YouTube videos much easier to deal with.

Introducing the YouTube Erase Song Feature

In a recent update, YouTube dropped a new “Erase Song” feature. You can now selectively mute any copyrighted audio in your YouTube video without impacting the rest of the soundscape too much. Your dialogue, sound effects, and more will remain more or less intact. We say “too much” and “more or less” because this is AI and it’s not perfect… but it’s pretty great and it’s definitely preferable to the alternative.

No need to lose momentum by fixing, re-exporting, and re-uploading your video. No more lost monetization.

Removing copyright music from a YouTube video is easy. You can hear the result yourself in the video embedded at the top of this post.

  1. Desktop or Mobile, It Doesn’t Matter: This feature works on both your desktop and your mobile device. So whether you’re editing on the big screen or on the go, you’ve got options.
  2. Find the Offending Clip: When YouTube detects a copyright claim on your video, they’ll notify you. Head to the video’s details page, click on “Copyright,” and then select “Erase Song.”
  3. Mute the Claim, Keep Everything Else: With just a few clicks, the offending audio will be silenced while preserving the other sounds in your video.

So if you’re a YouTube creator looking to avoid copyright music in your YouTube videos, “Erase Song” might just be the thing that saves your bacon… and your bottom line.

get started

(00:00) what’s up friends so YouTube just dropped a new update that is going to help you remove copyright issues on your video whenever music or audio is the issue it’s called Erase song and it will not only mute the claim song so you can get back to monetizing other audio like dialogue and sound effects won’t be affected okay so I’m playing not like us in the background I don’t know if it’s actually working if this feature is actually removing the song is playing on my Alexa right now but it is well done YouTube I

(00:34) know it’s not absolutely perfect but it does keep your video monetized and earning money plus you don’t have to try to remove it yourself or deal with having to reexport it and reupload it and do all that no it’s fixed and not the best but it works in the past when a video received a copyright claim for music YouTube usually gave you these three editing options those are still there but now you get this fourth option and this is how it works all right so when you upload a video YouTube will automatically check it for copyright

(01:06) issues and if there is one you will get notified and unfortunately that video will not be able to earn money and in some cases it will be blocked in certain regions so to fix it you need to go to the video Details page click copyright and then click select action here you’ll see all of the old options and then this new erase song feature click that and now you’ll see this option to mute only the claimed song without affecting the other sounds in your video and this does not only work on desktop you can do this

(01:38) on your mobile device also all you need to do is open YouTube Studio on your phone click content then choose the video with a copyright restriction tap this upper block click review issues tap the relevant claim and then select erase song it is that simple and you know what else is simple hitting the freaking subscribe button okay please help us get to a million I love you all thanks for watching check out this video over here if you want to know some YouTube settings that will help you get monetized a lot faster. See you over there
